Yesterday, our internship training took on a new layer: Career and Personal Development Training.
“It’s not enough to have technical skills. You must also learn how to build a career by developing soft skills. This is important because you’ll be working with different kinds of people in diverse environments,” our facilitator said.
That opening question (title) was answered during our session as we explored the topic of Core Values.
As developers, we often pour so much effort into gaining technical skills and forget about career and personal growth. But yesterday, the conversation shifted to something even more foundational fundamental.
Just like HTML forms the structure of a webpage, values are the inner framework that shapes our outlook, functionality, and behavior as individuals.
Our facilitator reminded us that:
“There are many people out there with the same skills as you. What differentiates you from them are your values”.
Values are the invisible compass (a core foundational believe) that quietly guides every decision, every action, every “yes” or “no.”
I learnt one simple fact:
“Skills can get you in the room, but values will keep you there.”
We were given two assignments, but I’ll leave you reflecting on one question:
What’s one core value that has shaped your growth journey the most?
